A change of bowlers saw Ralph Day and Patrick Kenney enter the fray and Patrick Kenney picked up two wickets in his first over with smartly taken catches by Sheldon Cummings as they removed the openers. The new Merrow batsmen, T. Corning and R. Butt continued to keep up the run rate, it took a good ball from Ralph Day to have T. Corning caught by wicket-keeper Adam Mullins in the 11th over. No more wickets were taken and Merrow finished on 122 for 3 off their 15 overs.

The target was thus just over 8 an over and had only been kept down to this by a marked improvement in the fielding and placement. This was led by Alex Tough who fielded deep and kept a possible 2 or 3 runs down to just a single with great running, fielding and throwing in to the wicket keeper, Adam Mullins.

Tom Dickens and Dan Mullins opened brightly for Weybridge and after 5 overs had reached 31 for no loss. Unfortunately they were then out for no addition of runs and thus Ralph Day and Alex Tough had to re-group which they did to great effect and after 8 overs were on 55 and getting back to the required run-rate. Alex Tough was then caught, which brought Dan Smith in to the frame. Ralph Day was seeing and hitting the ball cleanly and Dan Smith played intelligently to give him the strike. After 12 overs Weybridge were on the run-rate and a win looked on be on the cards when Dan Smith was caught. James Hart joined Ralph Day and they played well together and needed 11 off the last over, they got 7 so just failed to bring the team home.

Ralph Day finished on 51 not out, a tremendous performance.

Overall a fair result in that it could have gone either way and was played in good spirit by two competitive teams.

Tom Dickens and Will Isaacs opened for Weybridge against some good fast bowling from Belcher and Westphal. They scored at an even pace until Dickens was bowled in the 7th over with the score at 24. The next three overs only saw 10 runs added before Issacs was stumped. Dan Mullins appeared to have pulled a hamstring and thus many singles were turned down. But he batted with great composure before being caught for 23. At this stage 15 overs were gone with the score at 68 and the game seemed to be well lost. Ralph Day had other ideas and combined well with Tough and Rogers to get the score to 114 off the 20 overs. Day scoring a bright and breezy 32.

The difference between the teams boiled down to firstly the number of extras (Weybridge gave away 24 compared to 11 by East Molesey), secondly, some sloppy fielding which saw some over-throws needlessly given away and thirdly, fielding placement which saw East Molesey score twice as many 4s whilst restricting Weybridge when they batted.

So the good news is lots of opportunity to improve in the field and so win these close games in future. Overall, though, a very exciting game that went down to the wire.

League West Surrey League

Date of Game 13 May 2010

Venue Weybridge Cricket Club

Opponents Weybridge Vandals

Weather Conditions Overcast/cloudy/cold

Result Weybridge 108 for 9 off 18 overs.

Weybridge Vandals 11 for 10 off 8 overs

Weybridge win

Weybridge welcomed their local neighbours Vandals for the second league game of the season. Due to the poor light it was agreed to curtail the game to an 18:18 as opposed to the scheduled 20:20 game. Weybridge won the toss and chose to bat.

The openers Tom Dickens and Dan Mullins played effectively together and played the balls on their merit as opposed to slog and dash and thus soon reached 55 before Tom was caught behind for 15. Dan soon followed as he was well caught sky-ing one to deep mid-wicket for a well deserved 39. A big score looked to be on the cards as the 55 were achieved off 7 overs but some good fielding by Vandals and tighter bowling saw them restrict Weybridge to 108 for 9 off the 18 overs. Only Ben Koops who had looked in good form before being run-out to a run that was never on and Lorenzo Buroni who was bowled made significant other scores; scoring 14 and 10 respectively.

A quick turn round saw the opening bowlers Dan Mullins and Alex Tough build up some good pace that put the Vandals batsmen under severe pressure. In fact, none of the batsmen could cope with the pace and they were skittled out for 11 runs in 8 overs. Dan Mullins finishing with 2 for 8 off 4 overs, Alex Tough finishing with 8 for 2 off 4 overs.

The game was played in good spirit and it was nice to welcome so many of the visiting supporters into the Club House for some refreshment.

Thanks to Elaine Smith for scoring and Cedric Jones for umpiring and Mike Koops for the Match Report.

Date:- Friday 7 May 2010

On a bitterly cold May day the newly appointed Weybridge captain, Tom Dickens, gathered his team for the first game of the 2010 season in the West Surrey League. BoE won the toss and chose to bat which was a wise choice given the late start and the game thus having to be reduced to a 15:15 over game as opposed to the scheduled 20:20 game.

The BoE openers, H. O’Brien and M. Burling played very well to keep out a hostile Dan Mullins supported by Alex Tough. There were a number of hard chances in the slips off Dan Mullins bowling and Dan Smith managed to get a hand to one but the pace was too great and it was put down. Thirty six runs were taken off the first six overs most of which were glances off the bat and letting the pace of the ball do the rest as they went for four. In Jo Crane’s first over Dan Mullins fielded a drive by M. Burling and then threw down the wicket at the wicket-keeper’s end to run out H. O’Brian which was an exceptionally fine piece of fielding by Dan Mullins.

With 9 overs left BoE then upped their level of aggression in regard to their batting and Joe Crane and Ralph Day were in damage limitation mode. BoE finished on 135 for 1 off their 15 overs to set a hard target of 9 runs per over if Weybridge were to win.

A quick tea was taken and then Weybridge openers Tom Dickens and Dan Mullins took the field. Tom Dickens was trapped LBW in the 2nd over. Ralph Day and Dan Mullins then combined well in a quick-fire stand of 30 off 3 overs before Dan Mullins was well caught at deep mid on. Ralph Day soon followed as he was bowled by Herbert for 21. Jo Crane came and went before a partnership between Alex Tough and Elliot Haydon was forged. They came together after 7 overs when 43 runs had been scored which meant that there was a required run rate of 11.5 if Weybridge were to succeed and whilst Alex Tough batted freely at one end Elliot Haydon found it difficult to get the BoE bowlers away. This pair took the total to 118 but the BoE total was never in danger. Alex Tough finishing on 52 not out.

Overall a fair result in that BoE had a game plan that they stuck to very well. Whilst both teams used 6 bowlers BoE were more circumspect in their use and thus offered greater variety and difficulty to the batsmen. They also paced their batting to the skill level of the bowler they were facing and survived the Weybridge openers before opening their shoulders and hitting out.

The game was competitive and played in good spirit.

Many thanks to Elaine Smith for scoring and Mike Koops for umpiring and writing the Match Report.

“I would like to introduce myself. I am Paul Bruton and I am the new Chairman of the Colts section at Weybridge Cricket Club. We have a thriving junior section with a fundamental philosophy of inclusive participation. The Club, however is a competitive Club and has decided that it will use the Colts section as the training ground for future first team players. To that end, all players are welcome, and all children will get to play games, but it must be recognised that Coaches are going to select teams on merit and ability. It is our intention to provide coaching for all ages and to attempt to develop the children’s skills, whatever their ability, but we would ask parents to recognise that not all children have the same abilities and will not necessarily play for the first team in their particular age group. That is not to say they will be given less attention in training, nor be given every opportunity to develop. Ensuring they enjoy themselves is also high on the agenda!

Winter Nets have been organised this year to be held at St Georges College. They will be held for the different age groups as follows:

Wednesday 6.30pm – 7.30pm 24/2 ,03/3, 10/3, 17/3, 24/3, 31/3 (Under 12’s and Under 13’s)

Thursday 7.30am – 8.30pm 25/2, 04/3, 11/3, 18/3, 25/3 (Under 14’s and Under 15’s)

The cost for each session is £3 and will be payable in full at the first session attended. We will be organising training for the U16/U17’s and will revert with those arrangements as soon as they are finalised. Hopefully all managers have been in touch with last year’s teams, but new players are always welcome. If you would like to attend, but were not registered with the Club last year, could you let the Colts Chairman know you are interested by email on pb@evansrandall.com ”
